Heat Pumps 101

What is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one electric system that provides both highly efficient heating in the winter and ultra-efficient cooling in the summer.

It doesn't generate heat—it moves it. Think of it like a two-way air conditioner:

  • In Summer: It pulls heat out of your home and dumps it outside (like a traditional AC).
  • In Winter: It pulls heat out of the cold outdoor air and moves it inside. Yes, even air below freezing has thermal energy to extract!

Ductless vs. Ducted: Finding the Right Fit

Heat pumps can be installed in homes with or without existing ducts.

Ductless (Mini Split Heat Pump)

  • Best for: Homes without ductwork (baseboard, radiator, or oil heating and new construction homes) or when you want targeted control over specific rooms (finished basements, additions).
  • How it Works: Individual, quiet indoor units (often placed on a wall) connect to a single outdoor unit. Each indoor unit is a separate "zone."
  • Benefit: Incredible efficiency and Zone Control — you can set the temperature in the living room differently than the bedroom, saving energy by not heating unused areas.

Ducted (Central Heat Pump)

  • Best for: Homes with existing ductwork (replacing an old furnace and AC - see our graphic).
  • How it Works: The system connects to your current ductwork and uses your existing vents to distribute heated or cooled air throughout the entire house.
  • Benefit: Whole-home comfort with minimal visual change—everything is hidden.

The Cold-Climate Myth: How It Works in Winter

One of the biggest questions we get is:

"Will a heat pump work when it's freezing?"

The Answer: Absolutely!

Modern, cold-climate heat pumps are engineered to deliver reliable, powerful heat even in sub-zero temperatures.

Recent advancements in refrigerant and variable-speed compressors allow new systems to extract and amplify even the smallest amount of ambient heat from the air, keeping your home perfectly warm without relying on fossil fuels. Geothermal models go one step further by harnessing the stable temperatures below the local frost line, pulling constant heat from below ground.

The Value Proposition: Savings and Incentives

Recurring Energy Savings

Heat pumps are typically 2 to 3 times more efficient than even the most efficient gas furnace. For every $1.00 of electricity they use, they can deliver $3.00 worth of natural gas heating energy and nearly as much for oil and propane systems. This can dramatically lower your monthly utility bills year-round.

Upfront Financial Incentives

Because heat pumps are a clean energy solution, ME and NH state governments as well as local utility providers often offer huge financial incentives to homeowners and businesses.

  • Tax Credits: Federal/state tax credits can cover a significant portion of your installation costs.
  • Rebates: Utility rebates can provide thousands of dollars back to you.
